The NRS has announced that thirteen UC graduate students have been awarded a total of more than $30,000 in this year’s Mildred Mathias Graduate Student Research Grant program. This year’s winners come from five different campuses — Davis, Los Angeles, Riverside, Santa Barbara, and Santa Cruz — and plan to work at 11 different reserves. The program, now in its 20th year, supports graduate students who are conducting field research at NRS reserves. Over the life of the program, almost $.5M has been awarded to more than 300 students. The grants not only encourage students to conduct research, but also give them valuable experience in developing grant applications, meeting deadlines, and managing a budget. All winners are also invited to present their research results at the systemwide Mathias Symposium, which is held every other year at the Bodega Marine Laboratory, on the coast north of San Francisco
