Michal Shuldman is an NRS devotee. Since her days as a master's student at UC Davis, the UC Berkeley doctoral candidate has conducted research in, taken class field trips to, or led her own students on visits of more than a dozen different NRS sites. These include Stebbins Cold Canyon, Bodega Marine, the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory, Fort Ord, Angelo Coast Range, Quail Ridge, Stunt Ranch, McLaughlin, Big Creek, Rancho Marino, James Santa Monica Mountains, Hastings, and Sagehen Creek.

"It's unbelievable to have these reserves we can go to all over the state Shuldman says. "Just having land you can do science in and know that your equipment will be protected and you don't have to go through six months of permitting to get permission to collect a few berries or leaves is so valuable. It's also amazing, as a graduate student, to have a place to stay for free or little money for a day or a whole summer. And the reserve staff and managers have been really generous with their time to take students around and explain the research that's going on there." |
