Glossary

Carbon dioxide (CO2): Chemical compound composed of two oxygen atoms bonded to a single carbon atom, which exists as a gas in the Earth's atmosphere.

Carbon fixation: Any process through which gaseous carbon dioxide is converted into a solid compound.

Corm: A rounded, thick, modified, underground stem base bearing membranous or scaly leaves and buds, and acting as a vegetative reproductive structure. Source: Merriam Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 10th edition.

Exaptation: A feature that performs a function, but was not produced by natural selection for its current use. When a feature or structure develops through natural section, but then is utilized for a function other than that for which it was developed, that is exaptation. Conversely, a feature or structure produced by natural selection for its current use is referred to as an adaptation.
