The Need for HOST
The NRS HOST (Hands On for School Teachers) Program, a pilot program that ran in the years 2000 and 2001, improved ecological education for hundreds of students from underprivileged high schools by training teachers in the field at NRS reserves.

All students deserve an equal chance to succeed. Yet thousands of K-12 (kindergarten
through 12 grade) students in California are not being given the full range of educational
opportunities, especially outdoor experiences. Charged with developing a plan to broaden
horizons for these K-12 students, the University of California is outreaching to high
schools throughout the state that have low performance and limited availability of college

About the NRS
Formed in 1965, the University of California Natural Reserve System preserves
open lands which reflect California's natural diversity and manages these sites
specifically for teaching, research, and outreach. Unmatched in size, scope, and
ecological diversity, the NRS's thirty-four sites represent the largest
university-operated system of natural reserves in the world
Encompassing more than 130,000 acres, NRS reserves stretch from Pacific marine canyons to
Eastern Sierra slopes, and from the headwaters of the American River to the weathered
mountains in the East Mojave Desert. Sites also include the largest of the Channel
Islands, the most expansive protected tract of old-growth Douglas-fir forest, a native
California prairie, and some of the last protected remnants of coastal wetlands. Some
sites are remote and nearly pristine; a few border on UC campuses, like outdoor extensions
of the lecture hall; still others continue a fragile existence along advancing urban
fringes.
