In April 2008, ground was broken at the Sedgwick Reserve for the Tipton Meeting House, a new learning and administrative center. Architect Dennis Thompson conceptualized the 3000-square-foot meeting house, incorporating a number of sustainable design features: a solar-power array, rain-water cisterns to supply the building’s low-flow toilets, and various architectural innovations that promote summer cooling and prevent winter heat loss. The Tipton Meeting House is one of numerous LEED rated buildings constructed by local green builder Dennis Allen and Associates, and is expected to be completed in fall 2010.
The center will house the reserve’s K-12 outreach program and University-level instruction. It provides both indoor and outdoor classroom areas, administrative offices, restrooms, kitchen, and storage areas. The J. E. and Lillian Tipton Foundation provided a majority of the funds needed to compete the $2.8 million project, with a UCSB Foundation contribution. .
Construction of the Tipton Meeting House is a major step in an ambitious plan to upgrade all of Sedgwick Reserve’s facilities. Click here to learn more.
