In August 2005, ground was broken at the Sedgwick Reserve for the Tipton Meeting House, a new learning and administrative center. Leavengood Architects conceptualized the 6,600-square-foot meeting house, incorporating a number of sustainable design features: a solar-power array, a vegetated roof planted with native flora, rain-water cisterns to supply the building’s low-flow toilets, and various architectural innovations that promote summer cooling and prevent winter heat loss.
The center will house the reserve’s rapidly expanding K-12 outreach program and University-level instruction. It provides both indoor and outdoor classroom areas, administrative offices, restrooms, kitchen, and storage areas. The J. E. and Lillian Tipton Foundation funded the entire project.
Construction of the Tipton Meeting House is a major step in an ambitious plan to upgrade all of Sedgwick Reserve’s facilities. Click here to learn more.
