Research Reports
Geology 196HA: Senior Honors Project
Student: Martha Wulftange, Department of Geological Sciences, UCSB
Instructor: James Boles, Department of Geological Sciences, UCSB This
student project undertook to find strontium isotope evidence for the age of
Vaqueros and San Onofre formations and implications of unroofing on
south-western Santa Cruz Island. Evidence on Santa Cruz Island of the
uplifting and unroofing of mid-crustal igneous rocks are recorded in clasts
of the Vaqueros Formation, followed by deposition of deep rooted subduction
rocks (blue schist) of the San Onofre Breccia which interfingers with the
volcaniclastic Blanca Formation. Strontium isotopic ratio from pectins and
oysters from the Vaqueros, San Onofre, and Blanca Formations were correlated
with the strontium sea water curve for age determination. Funding: Faculty
Mentorship Program, UCSB.

Field Course Research Projects
Anthropology 115P/215. Field School
in Archaeology
Instructor: Jeanne E. Arnold, Department of Anthropology, UC Los Angeles
The activities of the four-week UC Los Angeles Field School in Archaeology
on Santa Cruz Island are part of long-term research and student training
programs focused on the evolution of social stratification over several
centuries prior to western European contact, as well as the impacts of
Europeans on historic-period Island Chumash cultures. Partial funding:
NRS Santa Cruz Island Travel Grant. For more information on the related
research, see Research Reports.
Anthropology 181: Archaeological Field
Class
Instructor: Michael A. Glassow, Department of Anthropology, UCSBThe
objective of this weekend long class field trip was to train students in the
methods and techniques of archaeological surveys and recording. Class
activities were tied to the instructor’s ongoing efforts to locate
habitation sites in the interior of the island dating to the period between
about 7,000 and 4,000 years ago. Partial funding: NRS Santa Cruz Island
Travel Grant. For more information on the related research, see Research
Reports.
Environmental Studies 107 A, B, C.
Natural History Field Quarter
Instructor: Stephen R. Gliessman, Department of Environmental Studies, UC
Santa Cruz
This field class trains undergraduate students in field techniques
regarding exotic plant species management and native species enhancement.
It has participated in a long-term study of fennel (Foeniculum vulgare)
suppression and non-fennel plant species recovery. For more information
on the related research, see Research Reports.
Geology 104B. Introduction to Geological
Field Methods
Instructor: James Boles, Department of Geology, UCSB
The southwest sections of Santa Cruz Island have long been of great interest
to field geologists for research and educational purposes. The area has a
thick section of Tertiary sedimentary rocks which are folded and faulted in
a complex pattern. Since the field station’s first years, UCSB geology
classes have used this area as a field classroom to teach and improve
students’ interpretative and mapping skills.
