MOTTE
RIMROCK RESERVE
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA NATURAL RESERVE SYSTEM RULES
The
Motte Rimrock Reserve, a part of the University wide
Natural Reserve System, was established in 1975. The
Motte Reserve is for the use of students and researchers
interested in studying the natural environment. One
of the functions of this Reserve is to make available
for future generations an area of land containing relatively
undisturbed natural habitats. To insure this purpose
we request that all persons using this Reserve abide
by the following rules. Additional rules for using the
facilities are available.
1.
You must have permission to enter the Reserve from the
Director at the address given below prior to coming
on the reserve. In addition, some areas are restricted
because of ongoing research or sensitive species. You
need to coordinate with the Director where you can walk
or drive on the reserve.
2.
If you are currently established as a researcher, please
contact reserve personnel at least 3 or 4 days in advance
to let them know when you will be on the reserve. We
currently have more than one project using the same
some of the areas as long as they do not conflict with
each other's research.
3.
It is the responsibility of the leader of a group or
project to ensure that all persons in the group are
familiar with these rules and all safety precautions.
Emergency handbooks and first aid guides are located
in all headquarters structures.
4.
Use of the headquarters building is by advanced reservation
only.
5.
Normally use of this Reserve should be restricted to
groups of less than 25 persons.
6.
MAXIMUM vehicle speed on the reserve is 15
m.p.h. Slower speeds may be necessary if wildlife is
present on or near the roads.
7.
All vehicles should be parked in the designated areas
and none should be driven off the roads or outside of
the parking areas. If you do not know where these parking
areas are check with the reserve director or staff.
8.
No bicycles, motorbikes or motorcycles are allowed within
the Reserve.
9.
No pets are allowed within the Reserve.
10.
Smoking is allowed ONLY on the patio
of the headquarters building.
11.
No open fires are permitted on the Reserve.
12.
Camping is allowed only within the headquarters compound.
13.
Collecting vertebrate animals is not allowed within
the Reserve. However, live-trapping and releasing the
animals is permitted, only after approval of an application
for research or teaching is accepted by the reserve
director and copies of all required permits/MOUs are
provided for the reserve files.
14.
No mass collection of invertebrates or plants is allowed
within the Reserve.
15.
Please do not disturb marked research plots.
16.
Research plot locations must be approved by the Reserve
Director before being used and marked. Research plots
should be clearly marked and identified with the name
of the researcher and the date. A map showing the location
of the research plots must be provided for the Reserve
files. At the conclusion of the project, stakes and
equipment must be removed and the area policed. A $35.00/hr.
fee will be charged for any cleanup required by reserve
staff.
17.
A copy of any reports, periodical papers, theses or
dissertations generated from any research must be provided
to the reserve for its files.
18.
Maps of the reserve to assist you are available from
the staff at headquarters.
19.
Before departure, please clean up all areas used by
your group. All waste material, such as tin cans and
garbage, must be removed from the Reserve. Under no
circumstances is any waste material to be left anywhere
in the Reserve. Do not bury your garbage.
Please
note that permission to use the Reserve may be withdrawn
or denied in the future if any of the rules and regulations
of the Reserve are violated.
