"The Coal Oil Point Reserve," a half-hour documentary about an NRS reserve located near Santa Barbara, has received a Telly Award in the Documentary category. The Telly Awards were founded in 1979 to honor outstanding local, regional, and cable TV commercials and programs, as well as the finest video and film productions.

This documentary, produced for UCTV by UC ANR (Agriculture and Natural Resources) Communications Services, introduced viewers to the wide range of research going on at this NRS site, which is located adjacent to the UC Santa Barbara campus. The program features several ongoing, reserve-based research efforts:

Coal Oil Point
* An innovative program involving 50 volunteers from the Audubon Society to re-establish a snowy plover breeding ground.
* A multidisciplinary look at recruitment and reproduction of intertidal animals.
* A graduate student using radio frequencies to track offshore currents.
* A USGS researcher who studies the role that parasites play in a coastal lagoon.

Jim O’Brien, of ANR Communications Services, co-produced the program with Jerry Booth of the NRS Systemwide Office. O’Brien served as videographer and editor, while Booth wrote the script and conducted the on-camera interviews. Other contributors from ANR Communications Services include Producer Ray Lucas, who handled the sound, and Director of Video Production Michael Poe, who provided the narration.

According to the Telly Awards website:

“…[A]ward winners represent the best work of the most respected advertising agencies, production companies, television stations, cable operators, and corporate video departments in the world. With a 26-year history of recognizing creative excellence, the Telly Awards is a widely known and highly respected international competition.”
